Soda with probiotics?

Yep. You read that right.

Soda has come a long way from the classic, ultra-sweet stuff. These days, the drink aisle is filled with new takes on an old favorite, including probiotic soda. But what exactly makes a soda probiotic? And what are those little microorganisms doing in your drink?

We've got answers.

What makes a soda probiotic?

The short answer? Live microorganisms.

Probiotic soda is a carbonated beverage made with probiotics, which are live microorganisms that can provide health benefits when consumed in the right amounts. These microorganisms are often called good bacteria because certain strains can play beneficial roles in the body.

But not every probiotic is the same. There are many different species and strains, and researchers study them individually to understand their potential effects. So when it comes to probiotic soda, the actual probiotic strain matters.

Let's talk about your gut

Your gut does a whole lot more than digest your lunch. It's home to a complex community of bacteria and other microorganisms known as your gut microbiome. Scientists are continuing to learn how this community interacts with digestion, the immune system, and other aspects of health.

Certain probiotic strains have demonstrated benefits in scientific studies, although research is still ongoing. That doesn't mean every probiotic has the same effect or that drinking probiotic soda guarantees a particular health outcome.

Still, it's a pretty interesting area of science. And one that we're happy to talk about over a soda.

Meet the probiotics in Culture Pop

Culture Pop contains a live probiotic strain called Bacillus Subtilis DE111. It's a specific strain of bacteria that has been studied for its potential role in supporting digestive health.

We add live probiotics to our sodas, alongside our signature combination of organic fruit juice, herbs, and spices. And because the probiotic we use is shelf-stable in our formulation, Culture Pop doesn't need to be refrigerated for probiotic viability under normal storage conditions.

Though, between us, we think it tastes pretty great cold.

Is probiotic soda the same as kombucha?

Not quite! While both can contain live microorganisms, they're made differently.

Kombucha is a fermented tea beverage. Its fermentation process gives it a distinctive taste that can be tart or vinegar-like. Culture Pop, on the other hand, isn't fermented. We add our probiotic directly to our soda, so it doesn't create that fermented flavor. Instead, you get the bright, fruity, fizzy taste you'd expect from a soda. Just with a little something extra.

Good soda is still the main event

We think ingredients matter. But we also think soda should be delicious. That's why Culture Pop starts with organic fruit juice for sweetness and flavor, plus herbs and spices for a little added complexity.

No refined sugar. No stevia. No artificial sweeteners. And live probiotics in every can.

Because we didn't set out to make something that tastes like a health product. We set out to make really good soda.
